The following steps are recommended for getting started with Open Code:

• Wherever possible, use open programming languages or Open Source software. Check whether there are Open Source alternatives to commercial tools
• Familiarise yourself with basic Open Source Licences and their differences, as a basis for reusing Open Code and for publishing Open Code yourself.
• Search for Open Code from other researchers, for example to reuse it or reproduce research results. 
• Look for opportunities to publish your source code as Open Code.
